Oahu Filipino Catholic Clubs’ charity queen hails from Waialua

By Lillian Lagapa Ulgaran | Special to the Herald

Trina Sagaysay of St. Michael Parish in Waialua is the 2008 Annual Charity Queen for the Oahu Council of Filipino Catholic Clubs scholarship fundraising project. Her title was announced on June 22 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish during a monthly membership meeting.

Sagaysay took the top honor when the St. Michael Filipino Catholic Club sold the most Portuguese sausages, pizza, bangus fish, manapua, bread, chicken and cookies out of the 13 council units participating in the annual fund drive for aid to Filipino students.

Her coronation and the distribution of scholarships will take place at 5 p.m. on Aug. 16 at St. Michael. The event will feature its annual demonstration of Philippine educational, religious and social culture plus arrays of delicious Filipino cuisine.

The runners-up in the fundraising project will serve in Queen Sagaysay’s “royal court.” They are Napua Alhambra Wong, St. Anthony Parish, Kalihi, second runner up; Monrose Mariano, St. Joseph Parish, Waipahu, third place; Emmy Agustin, St. Elizabeth, Aiea, fourth; Jaselle Perry, St. John Apostle and Evangelist, Mililani, fifth; Maraya Villanueva, Our Lady of the Mount, Kalihi, sixth; Chelsea Daoang, St. Theresa, Honolulu, seventh; Margaret Pascual, St. Jude, Kapolei, eighth; and Nicole Hernandez, St. Roch, Kahuku, ninth.

The organization extends its sincerest gratitude to all who worked toward achieving scholarships for our Filipino youth, the future leaders of our community.

The one-day-only fundraiser distribution is 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, July 12, at St. Anthony Parish, Kalihi. Don’t forget your tickets. Those who asked St. Elizabeth Filipino Catholic Club members to “pick up” for them are asked to retrieve the items after the Saturday 6 p.m. Mass.
